True Tuesdays afl. 12, Saed Nashef: 'Software kun je niet bombarderen'
Technologiebedrijven kunnen een grote aanjager vormen van de Palestijnse economie, omdat Palestijnse studenten goed opgeleid zijn en enorm gemotiveerd. Dat zegt
Saed Nashef, een voormalige manager van Microsoft en eigenaar van
Equiom, een technologiebedrijf dat veel softwareprojecten verzorgt voor buitenlandse klanten waaronder een aantal Nederlandse bedrijven.
Vijftien softwarebedrijven
De Palestijnse staat bestaat uit de door Hamas geleide Gazastrook en de door Fatah gecontroleerde Jordaanse Westoever. De kans dat de volgende Google of Twitter uit Gaza komt is daardoor niet zo groot, maar op de Westoever leveren dertien hogescholen volgens Nashef jaarlijks 2600 ingenieurs in computer gerelateerde gebieden af. Het probleem is om geld te vinden waarmee deze talenten bedrijven kunnen starten. Nashef heeft met zijn Israelische partner, de ervaren investeerder
Yadin Kaufman, daarom het Middle East Venture Capital Fund opgericht waarin de Europese Investeringsbank al
5 miljoen Euro heeft geinvesteerd. Nashef en Kaufman willen in twaalf tot vijftien Palestijnse bedrijven binnen vijf jaar ongeveer drie miljoen dollar per bedrijf investeren. Voorbeeld voor Nashef is
de deal van vorig jaar waarbij Yahoo in Jordanie voor ongeveer 100 miljoen dollar de Arabische portal Maktoob kocht. Ook technologiegigant Intel
investeerde al in twee Jordaanse bedrijven. De verwachtingen zijn hooggespannen, zoals ook blijkt uit de
site van de Palestijnse branchevereniging en de Palestijnse
incubator.
